the roundup

the roundup: unionmade – san francisco, ca

What can I possibly say about Todd Barket that hasn’t already been covered? The amount of editorial (and deservedly so) on the mighty Unionmade and Mill Mercantile is a reflection of impeccable taste. In a sea of the cliff-noted-everything-for-everybody-kitchensink that is currenty the landscape, their product mix is a fine example of curated restraint.

Much can be said about the stores development, the owners’ storied past, their deep retail pedigree, the engaged & attentive staff… but I feel only a few really know-know about Todd Barket, himself… what little he reveals… I, myself, having only known him a better part of 2 years can say he really DOES care. About everything. He’s the kinda guy that will go to a market week with 30 appointments deep, knowing he can only allow himself to write 15 of the lines. He respects the process. He appreciates the machine. He cares about the people involved in the industry each step of the way. He allows each player to do their job, on both sides of the table… THAT, my friends, is the only understanding that really matters.

the roundup: a trip through the desert

We are too lucky to have the honor of one of Texas’ treasures of a woman move to our town, Nashville, Tennessee.

I’ve heard of Lauren Wilkins for a couple of years now through mutual friends and colleagues. And then last year, back to back, I met Lauren in New York one week, visited with her in Austin the next week, and then spent a magical weekend with her in Marfa right after.

She is a dear woman, and now fast friend to all of us at the shop.

Lauren has the best style of any gal I’ve ever known. And – HANDS DOWN – has the best pair of worn-in Imogene’s on this earth. I tried to buy them back from her… and she said “never, not a chance!”

We are so happy that Lauren and her mate Josh just relocated to Nashville.

Lauren… welcome “home!”

Love,

Carrie

P.S. Lauren has had a very beautifully curated retail shop in Austin, called Bows + Arrows, for the past several years. In preparation for the move to Nashville, though, Lauren “moved shop” to Arrows + Arrows, her online store. Do check it out.

the roundup: susie crippen

Since the day I was born, my life has been rich with a very tight-knit family and very dear friends. They say that you can count your closest friends on one hand. I filled up that hand long long ago, but had to add a finger when I met Susie Crippen 5 years ago. We are soul sisters.

Matt and I have traveled to faraway lands with Susie, but she has racked up a lot of miles traveling on her own. Her last trip was to Guatemala, where she focused on aid work for an organization that she believes in so much. Susie could curate 20 Roundups, because everything that she utilizes in her life has a story. But, she chose to keep this installation simple, sharing with you her bare essentials. That’s so appropriate, because there’s not one material thing that you need when you are with Susie. Nothing else can fit in the room.

The meaningful conversations shared fill up all the space. Her presence is grand and beautiful and inspiring, all on its own.

Love,

Carrie

the roundup: simple is best

One of the one hundred thousand things that I love about Matt is that he’s just real simple. Actually, that’s not right at all. He’s REALLY complex. We most always come to the same conclusion at any juncture, but he most definitely takes a unique route getting there. And I love that about him, too.

It’s more like this: he likes very simple things, and not too many of them. Leave him to his element with his old nappy flat pillow that I am dying to throw away, a 3-pack of Hanes white boxers, an endless supply of 2% milk, some Gold Bond and hair gel from Rite-Aid, and he would be just fine forever. He wouldn’t even need his guitar. He would just make and play the music in his mind.

Along with the above generic essentials, he has a pretty tight curation of things that make him go woo and a dogmatic regimen of their uses.

Welcome to the world of my Matt. It’s a wild one.

Love,

Carrie

the roundup: mane attraction

Our beloved Mic had his final day at the shop last week, but we couldn’t let him leave without sharing a farewell Roundup. He just graduated barber school and starts today at Parlour & Juke salon. Many of our boys already have appointments with him, and you should too. This guy knows his craft! We already miss him but know he’s in the perfect place.

the roundup: chair enthusiast

Nick Dryden was literally the very first person we met when we moved to Nashville. He was instrumental in helping us secure the gas station as the home of imogene + willie, and furthermore, helped us realize our vision by offering his architecture firm‘s services pro-bono in order for us to get the building renovated. He understands and encourages urban revitalization like no other. His vision is clear and clean and simple, as is his design. So it was no shock to us when we asked Nick to do a Roundup – that he would choose to curate just one “thing,” chairs.

Albiet the most simple, to Matt and me, Nick Dryden is just simply the best man.

Love,

Carrie
